Frequently Asked Questions
VeteranCann is an easy-to-use online platform that connects veterans with our healthcare professionals. After completing a short patient questionnaire, our clinicians will review your information and let you know if our services may be suitable. If appropriate, they will explain potential next steps and discuss a healthcare plan tailored to your needs.
VeteranCann supports current and former service members across Australia who are experiencing chronic pain. We are currently accepting patients who have a DVA-accepted condition related to chronic pain or injury.
If you do not have chronic pain listed as an accepted condition with the DVA our in-house, ADTP accredited, advocate program may be able to assist you to obtain coverage.
The Department of Veterans’ Affairs (DVA) may cover the cost of treatment for chronic pain, provided specific criteria are met.
To be eligible:
- Your condition must be chronic, meaning it has lasted longer than 3 months
- Standard treatments must have been ineffective in managing your symptoms
Each DVA application must include:
- A written endorsement from your treating pain specialist confirming your care plan
- A suicide and mental health risk assessment showing no elevated risk
- Confirmation that you do not have a substance use disorder and are at low risk of developing one
Your pain specialist’s support letter is submitted alongside the Authorised Prescriber’s approval letter to the DVA.
VeteranCann manages this entire application process for you, ensuring all documentation is prepared and submitted correctly to streamline approval.
No. The DVA is not currently funding treatment via VeteranCann for mental health conditions. While some mental health conditions such as PTSD were previously covered by the DVA, their funding framework has since changed.
No referral is required. You can book directly with a VeteranCann doctor. If a review from a pain specialist is required, we will refer you to one of our partnered specialists who will complete your assessment and provide the necessary support letter for your DVA application.
You can book a phone consultation online at a time that suits you. Consultations are conducted securely by our Doctors and Nurses, who have experience in regulated areas of healthcare. After your consultation, you will receive clear guidance on next steps and ongoing support with any DVA application process.
You can begin by completing our quick online health form on our website. After submitting your form, you can select a preferred consultation time.
During your appointment, a VeteranCann doctor will review your information and, if suitable, refer you to a partnered pain specialist for final review. The specialist will then prepare a support letter to accompany your DVA funding application.
The process typically involves the following steps:
- Initial consultation with a VeteranCann doctor
- Referral to a partnered pain specialist for review and assessment
- Completion of a follow-up consultation and preparation of a support letter
- Submission of the specialist’s support letter and associated documentation to the DVA for funding consideration
VeteranCann coordinates this process from start to finish to help ensure a smooth and compliant application experience.
Yes.
- Gold Card and Orange Card holders have coverage for RPBS prescriptions for all conditions and are therefore able to access funded treatment via VeteranCann, where clinically appropriate.
- White Card holders can receive coverage for DVA accepted pain conditions only. These conditions are listed on your myGov account. Our team can help you review your eligibility during your consultation.
There are no upfront fees and no charges for your initial or ongoing consultations, and that includes the DVA Prescription co-payment of $7.70, which we cover on your behalf!
Our focus is on providing professional and compassionate care without adding any financial burden. From your first appointment and beyond, you can feel confident knowing the process is fully supported, transparent and centred on your wellbeing.

If your DVA application is approved under Tier 2 funding, your medication costs can be covered, however the DVA does not issue repeats for longer than one month at a time.
This means:
- You will need a brief monthly follow-up consultation with a nurse
- These check-ins are required to monitor your treatment plan and access your next scripts
- This is a standard DVA requirement to ensure your care remains safe and appropriate
If your treatment plan needs to be adjusted, a new application will be submitted to the DVA for approval. You can continue on your current approved plan while any updates are being reviewed.
This process keeps your care closely monitored and fully compliant with DVA guidelines.
VeteranCann does not have lock-in contracts or hidden fees. You can opt out of our service at any time without penalty. You remain in full control of the decisions you make about your healthcare.
